A comprehensive scientific review including over 350 studies, published in the journal Cell Press Blue, reveals that for adults who are not physically active, reducing protein intake may be an easier and more effective path to a long and healthy life. This is in contrast to previous studies that focused on calorie restriction, a method many find difficult to maintain over time.

According to the findings, low protein consumption is linked to significant improvements in metabolism, reduction of cellular damage, and improved cellular maintenance. A significant portion of the benefits stems from a metabolic hormone called FGF21, whose levels rise sharply following protein restriction and lead to health improvements.

Researchers highlighted three essential amino acids — methionine, isoleucine, and valine — whose high levels in people who do not exercise regularly may contribute to biological pathways associated with aging. Constant stimulation of these growth processes may cause cellular damage, systemic inflammation, and weight gain over time.

"While the benefits of protein for muscle building are clear for active people, most of the population likely consumes more protein than they actually need, and this excess consumption may lead to negative health consequences," noted Dudley Lamming, the lead author of the study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

It should be noted that this is a scientific review and not a new clinical trial, which identifies patterns in existing studies but does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship in humans. Furthermore, protein needs are not uniform: active people, pregnant women, and older adults dealing with muscle mass loss require higher protein intake.

In conclusion, the review emphasizes that public health guidelines should move away from sweeping recommendations and aim for personalized protein goals based on age and activity level, as further long-term studies are required to determine if these metabolic benefits indeed translate into a longer lifespan.
