YouTube is changing its view count — and the numbers are about to skyrocket

Starting August 24, a view on YouTube will be counted from the moment the video starts playing — similar to TikTok, Instagram, and Shorts. YouTube admits the change is expected to boost view counts, but emphasizes: creator earnings will not change.

The number appearing under videos on YouTube is about to take on a slightly different meaning. Starting August 24, the platform will change the way it counts video views: a view will be recorded the moment the video starts playing. YouTube says that following the change, creators are expected to see their view counts rise faster.

In doing so, YouTube is aligning itself with Instagram and TikTok, which count a view when a video starts playing or replays. On X, by contrast, a view is recorded after the user has watched the video for at least two seconds. YouTube already applied a similar counting method to Shorts videos last year. Until today, it was not entirely clear what the threshold was for regular videos, but the accepted assumption was that about 30 seconds of viewing were required to be included in the counter.

However, the old measurement method will not disappear entirely. YouTube will keep it under a metric called "Engaged Views" in the Analytics dashboard. The company explains that over the years, different counting methods were used across formats, which created confusion among creators. Now, it hopes that a unified method will allow them to get a clearer picture of their total exposure.

Although the numbers may skyrocket, YouTube emphasizes that the change will not affect creator earnings or their eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). In other words, starting August 24, you may see many more views under videos — but that does not necessarily mean more people stayed to watch them.
