Israeli sports are mourning the passing of Yaakov Goldfarb, one of the legendary goalkeepers of Hapoel Tiberias and a former Israel national team player in the 1960s, who has died at the age of 88.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1938, Goldfarb moved with his family to Kibbutz Ginosar on the shores of the Sea of Galilee during his youth. He displayed exceptional athletic talent early on, excelling in multiple disciplines simultaneously, particularly basketball and volleyball. He entered professional football after scouts from Hapoel Tiberias spotted him during a match in the Jordan Valley regional league. His joining the club in 1959 marked a major milestone, as the squad had previously relied exclusively on local city residents.

Between the posts, Goldfarb quickly became the backbone of the team. The pinnacle of his career came in the 1960/1961 season, when he led Hapoel Tiberias on a historic promotion campaign from Liga Bet straight into the premier division. Known for his remarkable agility, acrobatic dives, and sharp instincts, he was named the "Surprise of the Season" at the end of his debut campaign in the top flight, and later earned a spot in the division's team of the season for 1963/1964.

Goldfarb built a reputation as a penalty-saving specialist after stopping five out of eleven penalties he faced in the top division. This impressive form caught the attention of national team coach Gyula Mándi, leading to his international debut in 1962, during which he earned three caps for the Israel national team.

Alongside his playing career, Goldfarb moved to Ramat Gan to study sports coaching at the Wingate Institute while maintaining fierce loyalty to his club, traveling twice a week across challenging roads to train in Tiberias. In total, he played four top-flight seasons with Tiberias and another season in Liga Alef. A fascinating chapter of his career unfolded during the extended 1966-1968 double season, when he joined Shimshon Tel Aviv and shared goalkeeping duties in a rotation with the legendary Yaakov Hodorov.

Retiring from active play at the age of 30, Goldfarb transitioned to coaching, spending six years guiding Maccabi Yavne and leading them to promotion from Liga Bet to Liga Alef in the 1975/1976 season. Later, in the 1979/1980 campaign, he managed Hapoel Marmorek in Liga Alef South. Alongside football, he made lasting contributions to volleyball, playing and coaching for Elitzur Tel Aviv and guiding the team to the top of Liga Alef as an athlete and educator who left an indelible mark on Israeli sports.
