The Israel men's national handball team secured one of the greatest victories in its history on Saturday, defeating Slovenia 28-31 away from home and taking a major step toward qualifying for the European Championship for the first time since 2002. Facing one of the continent's strongest teams, Israel dominated most of the match, displaying exceptional combativeness and stellar defense to claim a historic win.

The victory also served as a resounding endorsement on the court for head coach David Pisonero, whom the federation and technical staff had worked hard to retain. Under the qualification rules, the top two teams in each group advance automatically to the European Championship, alongside the four best third-place finishers across all groups.

Stellar Performances and Tactical Discipline

Following a disappointing loss to the Czech Republic, Israel arrived highly motivated, fueled by a phenomenal performance from Daniel Mosindi, who scored 10 goals without a single miss. Mosindi netted Israel's first four goals to seize an early 4-3 lead. Although starting goalkeeper Yahav Shamir left the match due to injury, captain and goalkeeper Dan Tepper stepped up with nine crucial saves, exceptional leadership, and several brilliant passes.

The defense, anchored by Tomer Bodenheimer and Snir Neriah, performed remarkably well against a theoretically superior opponent. Israel maintained a narrow lead despite playing significant stretches down a player, though they narrowly trailed 14-13 at halftime.

The second half proved to be a turning point. Star playmaker Yoav Lumbroso leveled the score at 14-14, after which Israel never looked back. Jonathan Dayan and Mosindi extended the advantage, and Neriah capped a blistering 5-0 run to make it 18-14.

Closing Out a Historic Win

Tepper continued his heroics in goal, while Lumbroso and Mosindi remained unstoppable. A vital goal by Ram Turkinitz extended the margin to 22-18 with roughly fifteen minutes remaining. Slovenia intensified its physical play and narrowed the gap to 24-21, but Israel refused to waver. Dayan scored a crucial goal, and Mosindi sealed the historic 31-28 victory.

In March, Israel will face Bosnia in a crucial double-header before concluding the group stage with home matches against the Czech Republic and Slovenia. With this monumental win in Slovenia, the national team sits in prime position to secure its long-awaited berth at the European Championship.
