Pnina Aronov made history for Israeli sports on Saturday by winning the gold medal at the IMMAF World MMA Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia. Competing in the senior division under 56.7 kg, Aronov triumphed in the final by defeating Aysha Shamodukova of the Czech Republic via a third-round submission, capping an undefeated week with five victories in five bouts.

Throughout the tournament, Aronov showcased absolute dominance by securing three wins by submission and two by unanimous decision. Her road to the world title began with a unanimous decision victory over a Russian opponent. In the round of 16, she submitted the African champion from Zambia in the first round, before defeating Sarah Carney of Ireland by submission in the second round. In the semifinals, Aronov overcame Elizaveta Kovaleva of Russia by unanimous decision to advance to the gold-medal match.

Despite her athletic success inside the cage, Aronov also faced unsportsmanlike behavior from her opponents from Zambia and Ireland, who refused to shake her hand after their defeats despite her proactive gesture. As the last remaining Israeli representative out of a 15-fighter delegation, Aronov stood atop the podium to secure a milestone achievement for Israeli MMA.

Ido Pariente, president of the Israeli MMA Association, praised the historic feat: "Pnina is showing the entire world the female strength that comes from our country. The first world champion in the history of Israeli MMA. Five fights in five days in one of the toughest competitions in the world. Pnina, the entire association and the people of Israel are proud of you."

Arik Kaplan, president and CEO of the 'Ilan' Association for Non-Olympic Sports, added: "Pnina Aronov is the world champion. Five fights, five victories, and three submissions, including in the final, are a tremendous achievement. Even when faced with unsportsmanlike behavior, Pnina maintained her values and reached the peak of the podium. This is a historic day for Israeli MMA and a touching moment for Israeli sports as a whole."
