TikTok is helping to promote and normalize the sex industry through lifestyle videos that indirectly link to paid pornographic content on OnlyFans, according to a joint report by two anti-exploitation organizations published by The Guardian. Researchers spent a year examining seemingly non-sexual content published on TikTok by some of the platform's most popular young OnlyFans creators, uncovering coded hints to pornography hidden within shopping sprees, pet care, baking, and skincare advice.

One of the most common narratives in these posts is that selling sexual services on OnlyFans guarantees a wonderful life filled with freedom, fun, friendship, and substantial wealth, the report notes. The posts frequently feature imagery of cash, large homes, private jets, and luxury cars, accompanied by captions such as how it feels to know all of this is mine at age 23 thanks to 250,000 men. The study, titled From TikTok to OnlyFans, was conducted by researchers from the British organization Cease and the Australian group Collective Shout.

Coded Promotion and Algorithmic Reach

Although TikTok bans direct mentions of OnlyFans, direct links to the platform, and sexual solicitation, researchers found that the platform actively distributes non-sexual content from popular creators who use coded language, emojis, and suggestive gestures to signal that adult content is available elsewhere. Creators often use the word corn instead of porn, or pair a corn cob emoji with a star symbol to evade content moderation filters.

Many posts promote OnlyFans accounts as a miraculous escape from poverty and unemployment, suggesting the platform rescues young women from grim circumstances and grants them luxury goods. However, the report highlights a massive income disparity: while OnlyFans data shows that the top 5,000 creators have each earned over one million dollars since 2016, the estimated average income for the platform's five million registered creators is roughly one thousand dollars per year.

Industry Criticism and Platform Responses

Melinda Tankard Reist of Collective Shout described TikTok as a digital pimp on an industrial scale that channels young girls into the sex industry. The research was commissioned following concerns that high-profile OnlyFans stars like Sophie Rain and Aryia Ketsia wield massive teenage followings on TikTok. Rain gained fame through content filmed at a Miami production house where women sell adult content, with auditions frequently promoted through suggestive TikTok dance videos.

In response to the findings, a TikTok spokesperson stated that the platform strictly prohibits sharing or displaying sexual content, employs advanced technologies to enforce community guidelines, and designs its systems to prevent age-inappropriate content from reaching minors. An OnlyFans spokesperson emphasized that the platform is strictly for adults aged 18 and older, maintaining rigorous onboarding procedures to prevent underage access.
