A 17-year-old student stabbed her mathematics teacher inside a classroom at a school in Brazil, in a severe incident captured on security camera footage, local media reported on Saturday.

The attack took place on September 11 at the Dr. Gerson dos Santos Peres state school in the city of Cametá, located in the state of Pará in northern Brazil. Footage shows the student standing near the desk of teacher Betânia de Almeida Prestes while the two are alone in the classroom.

Security Camera Footage Captures Struggle

For a few moments, the student is seen playing with her hair before suddenly pulling out a hunting knife and lunging at the teacher. Prestes managed to dodge the first blow and attempted to seize the knife. A struggle ensued between the two, during which the student managed to stab the teacher in the back and nearly struck her a second time in the facial area.

The teacher finally managed to break free from the student's grip and fled the classroom to call for help. The footage shows the student chasing her out of the room.

Police Arrest and Investigation

Police officers who were called to the scene arrested the student. The hunting knife used in the attack was later found inside a classroom trash can. According to a report by the Civil Police in Pará, the teenager stated during interrogation that she attacked the teacher because she did not like her.

The teacher was evacuated to the regional hospital in Cametá, where she received medical treatment and stitches. A CT scan showed that the knife blade did not damage vital organs, and she was discharged from the hospital after observation.

Due to her age, the student's name was not published. A local attorney explained to the New York Post that under Brazilian law, minors do not bear criminal responsibility in the same way as adults. However, the teenager can be charged with an offense equivalent to attempted murder and subjected to "educational-rehabilitative measures," which may include detention in a closed facility.

The Public Education Workers Union in Pará condemned the attack and called on authorities to investigate it thoroughly. "Violence against the educational system is violence against society as a whole," the union stated.
