In recent years, a surge of teenagers flooding gyms across Israel has led to severe evening congestion, prompting some fitness centers to restrict youth access. To address this issue, the municipality of Petah Tikva has launched an innovative solution by opening professional gyms in all local middle and high schools.

Advanced Equipment and Strict Supervision

Each facility was established with an investment of approximately half a million shekels, featuring state-of-the-art equipment comparable to private fitness clubs. Students have access to strength machines, cardio equipment, free weights, and functional training gear. During the school day, these facilities are utilized by sports classes and physical education programs, while some institutions keep them open during afternoon hours and school breaks.

"We want teenagers in Petah Tikva to grow up with a routine where physical activity is a natural part of their daily lives, not just something done in a PE class," explained Petah Tikva Mayor Rami Greenberg.

From Students to Certified Instructors

Beyond regular workouts, these school gyms serve as a vocational platform for 12th-grade students in sports tracks. Participants undergo a specialized training course in collaboration with the Levinsky-Wingate Academic Center, heavily subsidized by the municipality and the academic institution. Graduates receive an official professional certification as gym and health instructors, enabling them to enter the job market immediately after graduation.
