Remains Identified in Negev Bring Closure to 2020 Honor Killing Case
Six years after 20-year-old Nivin Al-Amrani was murdered and her body concealed in the Negev, forensic remains have been identified, bringing closure to a complex murder case prosecuted without a body.

Six years ago, 20-year-old Nivin Al-Amrani disappeared from the Bedouin town of Hura in the Negev. No one reported her missing to the police, and no search was initiated on the day she vanished. It was only a month later, when her terrified brother Sari called the police emergency hotline, that an investigation finally began. The probe led to the conviction of her brother, Naim, who was sentenced to 28 years in prison. However, the case remained haunted by the absence of a grave or a body—until remains were discovered in the open Negev terrain and conclusively identified as Nivin.
The murder took place on March 28, 2020, following a violent altercation at the family's residential compound in Hura. According to the amended indictment, Naim attacked his sister with a knife, pinned her to the floor, and slit her throat, while a nephew, Naser Al-Amrani, repeatedly kicked her. Nivin's mother, who is paralyzed and uses a wheelchair, witnessed the brutal assault and tried in vain to reach her daughter, but was struck and threatened by her husband, Al-Amrani. A live-in caregiver, Hanan Abu-Raqba, also witnessed the horrific scene. For years, the case relied heavily on circumstantial evidence, forensic findings under poured concrete, and Hanan's testimony, pursued without the physical body of the victim.
Hanan, who originally came from Gaza at age 14 without legal status, faced immense pressure, fear, and rigorous cross-examination during seven to eight court sessions. Despite inconsistencies and questions regarding her testimony, her detailed account of the cleanup, the poured concrete, and a celebratory lamb feast held to mask the blood was corroborated by forensic blood traces and cell phone records. In May 2022, Naim was convicted of intentional homicide and sentenced to 28 years in prison, while accomplices received prison terms for related offenses. Although Naim never revealed the location of the body, the recent discovery of her remains brings a profound human closure, ensuring that Nivin finally has a proper resting place bearing her name.
