IDF Boosts Readiness Amid Fears of Copycat Terror Attacks After Holiday Failures
The Israeli defense establishment warns of potential copycat terror attacks following thwarted plots during the holidays, as the IDF reinforces forces in the West Bank and Gaza border.
The Israeli defense establishment fears that frustration among terror factions following their failure to execute major attacks during the holiday season will trigger new attempts, including copycat and inspiration attacks. In response, the IDF has intensified counterterrorism operations across the West Bank and raised readiness levels nationwide.
Counterterrorism Operations in Qabatiya and Bidu
During the holidays, IDF troops operated in several West Bank locations to thwart attacks before execution. Duvdevan unit fighters arrested two terrorists in Qabatiya who, according to the military, planned immediate attacks, potentially for Yom Kippur. The arrests relied on precise intelligence during a sweeping brigade-level operation in the village.
Significant operations also took place in Bidu, the home village of the terrorist who carried out the shooting attack near Neveh Tzuf. Forces mapped his home, searched over a hundred locations, and questioned approximately 90 suspects. Simultaneously, counterterrorism actions continued across the West Bank, reinforced by the deployment of the Egoz unit to the sector.
Defense officials assess that the terrorist who carried out the Neveh Tzuf attack acted alone. However, the IDF notes persistent efforts by terrorist networks to orchestrate major attacks during the holidays. Because these attempts largely failed, security agencies warn that desperation may fuel further plots.
The Neveh Tzuf Shooting and Heightened Alert
Natanel Shakron, a resident of Alei Zahav in his 40s, was killed in a shooting attack near Neveh Tzuf in the Binyamin region. Shakron had gone with his eldest son to the Ein Reaya spring to immerse themselves ahead of Yom Kippur when a passing motorist opened fire on the bathers. He was evacuated to Beilinson Hospital in critical condition, where medical staff pronounced him dead.
Following the shooting, the terrorist abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot with a weapon. IDF and Israel Police forces launched an extensive manhunt, during which an IDF tracker spotted and fired at the suspect. Hours later, Duvdevan commandos raided a hospital in Ramallah, located the wounded suspect, and arrested him.
Initial investigations indicate the 37-year-old Hamas operative from the Bir Zeit area was familiar with the location and had scouted the site a day prior. Security assessments suggest he exploited the influx of residents visiting the spring ahead of the holiday.
Concurrently, the IDF significantly heightened alert levels along the Gaza border, reinforcing aerial and ground forces. The military emphasized that while there is no specific concrete warning, the enhanced preparedness ensures rapid response and early neutralization of emerging threats.
