Have you ever encountered a dessert so simple yet so mesmerizing? Imagine ultra-thin apple slices layered meticulously in a loaf pan and baked right inside a rich, bubbling caramel. It is remarkably easy to prepare, visually stunning, and surprisingly made with just a handful of ingredients.

Ingredients

  • About 10 large apples

  • 100g sugar (about half a cup) for the caramel

  • Another 100g sugar mixed with the dry ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Heat 100g of sugar in a pan or small pot over medium heat until it melts and turns into a golden caramel. Tip: If the sugar caramelizes too quickly, lower the heat to prevent burning. Gently swirl the pan rather than stirring aggressively.

  2. Pour the hot caramel evenly into the bottom of a large loaf pan.

  3. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining 100g of sugar with the cornstarch and salt.

  4. Peel the apples and slice them paper-thin. Using a mandoline is highly recommended for best results, but a sharp knife works if you slice carefully.

  5. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) on a static setting.

  6. Arrange the apple slices inside the loaf pan over the caramel in uniform layers. Every few layers, sprinkle some of the sugar and cornstarch mixture. Continue layering until you run out of ingredients, packing the apples down firmly so you can fit as many as possible right to the top of the pan.

  7. Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil. Placing a flat weight on top is optional but helps press the layers together.

  8. Place the loaf pan onto a larger baking sheet to catch any bubbling syrup, and bake in the preheated oven for 1 to 1.5 hours.

  9. Remove from the oven, carefully unmold onto a serving dish, and serve warm or chilled. Garnish with biscuit crumbs and pair with a scoop of ice cream for the ultimate treat.
