Is tech giant Apple preparing to change the equality policy between its flagship devices again? While the prevailing belief in the industry was that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models would offer an identical camera array, well-known tech leaker Ice Universe challenges the forecasts and claims that the largest and most expensive model will receive exclusive camera upgrades.
An end to equality between Pro models
In the iPhone 17 Pro series, Apple maintained a uniform specification for both devices, with all three rear cameras equipped with 48-megapixel sensors. However, according to the new information, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may exclusively offer an increased 6x optical zoom, alongside advanced prism technology with five light refractions. This technology allows the telephoto lens to capture significantly more light and produce sharp, detail-rich images even in challenging low-light conditions.
In contrast, the compact iPhone 18 Pro model may settle for a more modest telephoto system. Additionally, some reports in the supply chain hint that the variable aperture mechanism, which allows mechanical control over the amount of light in the main lens, might also remain exclusive to the Pro Max model. However, analysts qualify the findings, noting that these may only be early prototype tests.
The price of the elite camera
If the leak materializes, it will be a strategic move that will put heavy pressure on consumers' pockets. Many users who prefer a smartphone with dimensions comfortable for one-handed use will have to decide whether to compromise on image quality and optical range, or upgrade to the larger and heavier device priced at a particularly high premium.
Apple's policy regarding camera differentiation has previously caused frustration among users, and its return will signal a clear attempt to push sales toward the most profitable model in the series. All official details, alongside the launch of the company's first foldable iPhone, are expected to be revealed at Cupertino's annual announcement event on September 9.
