Nscale Negotiates Massive AI Infrastructure Deal with Anthropic

Nscale, a company specializing in artificial intelligence computing infrastructure, is currently in advanced negotiations with Anthropic, the developer of the Claude family of language models. The potential deal involves supplying computing power that could reach an estimated $45 billion, addressing the soaring demand for infrastructure capable of running next-generation AI models.

According to reports from Bloomberg, the discussions center around a contract for the second computing facility at Nscale's Monarch data center campus in West Virginia. The planned facility is expected to deliver 460 megawatts of computing power, utilizing Nvidia's advanced Vera Rubin AI processors. Furthermore, Anthropic has been granted a right of first refusal for a third structure planned at the campus.

The Shadow of Microsoft's Exit and Industry-Wide Debt Concerns

This potential agreement follows a previous arrangement signed last August, under which Anthropic committed $45 billion to lease cloud computing services from Nscale's West Virginia facilities. The talks take place against the backdrop of Microsoft withdrawing from a strategic deal with Nscale, where Microsoft was supposed to serve as the anchor client for a major planned data center before power grid connection delays pushed the operational timeline into the 2030s.

The rapid expansion required for AI infrastructure comes with massive capital expenditures, leading to increasing investor scrutiny. Last week, shares of rival infrastructure provider CoreWeave dropped amid concerns over a debt burden approaching $50 billion. At the same time, investor groups have reportedly pressured Anthropic to lower its valuation targets ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO), reflecting broader market caution regarding high-debt AI investments.
