Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo delivered one of the most impressive comebacks at the US Open, rallying from two sets down in the third round to eliminate Taylor Fritz 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Fritz, the tournament's ninth seed and the 2024 runner-up in New York, seemed on track for a straightforward victory after claiming the opening two sets. However, the 25th-ranked Cerundolo gradually raised his level from the baseline, capitalising on the American's mounting unforced errors and frustration to complete the biggest Grand Slam comeback of his career. This marks the Argentine's first appearance in the US Open round of 16.

Men's Draw Surprises

Cerundolo's next opponent will be Belgium's Alexander Blockx (world No. 34). Blockx continued his remarkable run in New York by defeating fifth seed Flavio Cobolli 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-0, 6-3. Cobolli, who reached the Roland Garros final earlier this season, exited the tournament earlier than expected.

Swiatek Battles Through

In the women's draw, world No. 8 Iga Swiatek secured her place in the round of 16 after a hard-fought battle against Marie Bouzkova (world No. 26). The Polish star prevailed 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3), showing composure in both tiebreaks.

Bouzkova pushed Swiatek throughout the match, preventing her from establishing her usual rhythm, but the four-time Grand Slam champion proved more precise in the critical moments. Swiatek will next face Zheng Qinwen, who came from behind to defeat Madison Keys 1-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5.
