US Military Forms Iron Gate Task Force to Block Iran Smuggling
The US military is establishing the Iron Gate task force to block weapons smuggling and sanctions evasion through Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea, CENTCOM announced.

The United States military is establishing a new task force dubbed "Iron Gate" to curb advanced weapons smuggling and illicit trade through Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday. Operating from Tampa, Florida, the task force will coordinate with multiple government agencies to block dual-use goods and revenue sources used to fund military manufacturing. CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated that the initiative aims to further restrict Tehran's ability to finance proxy activities and rebuild its arms stockpiles following months of naval blockades.
The naval blockade, initially imposed by US President Donald Trump in April and renewed in July after a brief hiatus, has successfully prevented over $25 billion in Iranian crude oil exports, severely straining the local economy. Despite escalating US sanctions targeting aviation and financial sectors, Tehran maintains strict preconditions for any comprehensive agreement, demanding the total lifting of sanctions and maritime blockades. Concurrently, regional tensions have intensified around the Strait of Hormuz, where tanker incidents and recent US airstrikes targeting Iranian anti-air installations highlight the fragile security landscape.
Despite ongoing military friction, diplomatic efforts are advancing through Qatari mediation. While public stances remain rigid regarding Iran's nuclear program, diplomatic sources indicate potential openings for compromise as Tehran reviews recent proposals aimed at bridging long-standing gaps with Washington.
