Officials have confirmed that at least 600 structures have been destroyed, while widespread power outages have left thousands of residents without essential services.
State Governor Bob Ferguson has declared a state of emergency and implemented a ban on all outdoor burning throughout Washington. The National Guard has been deployed to the area to assist in containment efforts.
"I think we will be shocked by the sights that will be revealed as the day progresses," warned a National Guard official.
The fires erupted against the backdrop of an extreme heat wave that previously hit Europe and has now reached the western United States. Authorities state that current weather conditions are expected to further complicate firefighting efforts.
As of now, there are no official reports of fatalities, though several individuals have been injured, with their conditions yet to be determined. Reports indicate that the fire has already consumed approximately 5,390 acres. The blaze began on the western plains of the region, where strong winds carried it northeast toward a nearby state park. After crossing the river, the fire began burning through residential neighborhoods in the city's northwest. Mass evacuations remain ongoing, with the Spokane Convention Center serving as a central shelter for over 409 families forced to flee their homes.
