A routine MRI scan revealed a cancerous tumor in the brain of the well-known star, who underwent two complex head surgeries following a severe complication discovered by a dermatologist that nearly cost her her life: "I am just grateful to be alive."
A life-saving accidental discovery: Beloved American actress Busy Philipps ("Dawson's Creek", "Cougar Town") shared on Wednesday in a candid interview with People magazine that she underwent two complex head surgeries this year after being diagnosed with brain cancer. This followed a routine full-body MRI that revealed a malignant tumor of the oligodendroglioma type in the frontal lobe — a 2.6-centimeter finding that had developed in her brain without any prior symptoms.
Following the doctors' announcement regarding the need for urgent surgical intervention, Philipps (47) underwent a complex surgery in March that lasted about five hours, during which the tumor was completely removed without the need for radiation or chemotherapy.
However, despite the initial success, the recovery process encountered an unexpected complication. During a routine visit to a dermatologist, a severe bacterial infection (staphylococcus) was discovered in the area of the surgical incision. The situation deteriorated rapidly, forcing the actress to undergo another emergency surgery to clear the infection and remove a titanium pin that had been attached to her skull.
Now, after recovering from the complication, Philipps has already returned to the screen and is participating in the filming of the new series "Cupertino" by CBS, alongside routine imaging follow-ups. "I am just grateful to be alive," the actress concluded emotionally.
