Leadership Shakeup at Medica Tel Aviv

The CEO of Medica Tel Aviv hospital, Anat Nussbaum, has announced her immediate resignation following a major scandal involving severe regulatory breaches uncovered at the facility.

This dramatic step comes about a month after a surprise inspection by the Ministry of Health led to a closure order for the upscale medical center located on HaBarzel Street in Ramat HaHayal.

To stabilize the system and restore regulatory trust, Medica management swiftly appointed Dr. Eitan Hai-Am as Nussbaum's successor. Hai-Am is a veteran health system leader who previously served as Ministry of Health Director General, Soroka Medical Center Director General, and head of the Assuta private hospital chain.

Severe Medical Violations

The resignation follows one of the most severe scandals in the private healthcare sector. The Ministry of Health's surprise inspection revealed life-endangering failures.

Among the findings:

  • Nurses performed surgical procedures instead of certified physicians.

  • Uncertified anesthetists operated in two surgical rooms.

  • Illegal use of sensitive narcotic drugs.

The Ministry of Health declared the situation a "systemic management failure and an immediate, severe danger to patients' health and safety," ordering the cessation of all medical activities on September 28.

"This decision stems from my deep understanding of responsibility and leadership. The CEO role carries weight, supervision duties, and moral and managerial significance," Nussbaum wrote to the staff.

Moving Forward Under New Management

Medica aims to be a major player in Israel's private medical market, but this incident follows previous troubles, including a July surprise inspection at the Medica Raphael branch which also led to surgical shutdowns.

All involved parties, including management and board members, have been summoned for hearings, while the ministry weighs disciplinary actions against staff who performed unauthorized medical procedures.
