Major wildfire threatens the UK’s largest nuclear power station

A massive wildfire is currently raging in the UK, approximately four kilometers from the country’s largest nuclear power station. The facility has been placed on high alert amid concerns that shifting winds could push flames and a dense cloud of smoke toward the site.

The dangerous incident began in the nearby Minsmere nature reserve. Volunteers had previously discovered the remains of an illegal campfire in the reserve, which serves as a habitat for some of the UK’s rarest wildlife species.

The fire continued to burn out of control throughout the night as more than 120 firefighters battled to contain it. The blaze broke out on a day when temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius and a drought was declared across more than half of England. Firefighters have been working to slow the fire's advance by digging trenches, while helicopters have been pumping water from the nearby North Sea to douse the flames.

Although a risk remains, it is not expected that the wildfire will physically spread to the power station or the nearby Sizewell C site, which is currently under construction, as marshy areas, roads, and paths are expected to significantly impede its progress. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated:

"I will make sure that the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has all the support, the mutual aid from other services that they need, and any other resource that is required."
