British Man Sentenced for Keeping Mother’s Body in Freezer for Three Years
A British court has sentenced 60-year-old Christopher Phillips to two years and four months in prison. He kept his mother's body in a freezer for nearly three years while continuing to collect her benefits.
A British court has sentenced a man to prison for keeping his mother's body in a freezer for nearly three years, during which he continued to collect her pension and welfare benefits, totaling nearly 80,000 pounds (108,000 dollars).
60-year-old Christopher Phillips pleaded guilty to preventing the lawful and decent burial of his 89-year-old mother, Sylvia Phillips, after she passed away in March 2023. He also pleaded guilty to fraud, having received about 78,000 pounds in benefits after her death.
Police stated that a pathologist was unable to determine the cause of death, but no suspicious physical circumstances were found. The case was exposed in February when police arrived at Phillips' home in Porthcawl, South Wales, following concerns from medical professionals who had not seen Sylvia since September 2022.
During a search, officers discovered a freezer containing Sylvia's body, covered in a leopard-print silk blanket, with flowers and a birthday card nearby. According to court testimony, Christopher had been his mother's sole caregiver since 2008. Following her death, he purchased a chest freezer and kept it in the dining room. Defense lawyers noted that he was deeply attached to her, often sleeping in the same room and talking to her as if she were still alive.
Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke sentenced Phillips to two years and four months in prison, with 40% to be served in custody. The judge stated that his mother "suffered the indignity of being kept in a freezer for three years" while he profited financially from her death.
