TikTok announced today (Thursday) the layoff of 250 employees and the closure of its offices in Nashville, Tennessee. The initial report on the move was published by The New York Times, noting that the layoffs and closure affect, among others, some of the company's content moderation teams.

Zana Crowley, a spokesperson for TikTok's US joint venture, confirmed the news and stated that the office closure is intended to "streamline our operations and better align teams for long-term growth." She added that the company "remains fully committed to providing safe and positive experiences for 200 million Americans."

The widespread cuts come at a time when social media companies are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to monitor and remove violent or explicit content from their platforms. The Nashville office, which TikTok leased in 2024, is expected to close permanently on October 5.
