Storm over appointments in the Council for Higher Education: Pre-petition warning letter submitted to Minister Kisch

A pre-petition warning letter to the Supreme Court was submitted on Tuesday to Minister of Education Yoav Kisch, demanding an immediate halt to the appointment process for new members of the Council for Higher Education (MALAG). The letter asserts that the appointments are being promoted during an election period, in violation of the principle of governmental restraint and contrary to the guidelines of the Attorney General.

According to the 'Academy for a Democratic Israel', the organization behind the letter, the minister's direct involvement in all stages of the process and the fact that it began only after the start of the election recess raise serious concerns regarding political motivations and potential harm to the independence of the Council for Higher Education.

It is further claimed that Kisch continued the process despite the Committee of University Heads requesting the Attorney General's position, and allegedly announced a candidate's appointment before the consultation process was complete. The organization demands a freeze on all appointments until the Attorney General's position is clarified, warning that it will consider petitioning the Supreme Court if the process continues.
