Instead of wasting the first ten minutes of a workout searching for the exact playlist, Spotify wants to let the music adapt to your heart rate and pace, and is introducing a new workout mode that connects its AI capabilities to your performance in the field.
Dynamic pacing and heart rate integration
Spotify has launched a new mode for its app designed for runners. With Spotify's new running mode, you will receive a playlist prepared especially for you — one that fits exactly the different stages of the workout. The mechanism will ease you into the warm-up stage, and from there will change the pace during the run itself — according to your pace and based on your musical preferences.
The feature will be available in the Fitness Hub — a new area that Spotify launched last April, designed to help you get in shape together with the streaming app. In the Fitness Hub, Spotify introduced a series of guided workouts including videos, in what appears to be a move aimed at competing with fitness services like Apple Fitness Plus, Peloton, and others.
Through the Fitness Hub, you can choose one of 25 fixed programs for runs, such as interval running, standard running, and pyramid training. Users can also customize the expected length of the run, the heart rate they are aiming for in each part (BPM), and the type of music they want to hear throughout the run. Alongside playing the songs, the running mode will also be able to generate voice alerts for each stage of the workout.
The new feature is an upgrade to the company's AI-based playlist creation capability, which already knows how to take a prompt and generate a relevant playlist accordingly. The company explains that after seeing that many users use AI to generate playlists for running and workouts, they decided to take up the challenge and create a dedicated mode that will provide the built-in option, alongside the ability to use AI to create playlists for other cases.
The new feature will be available only to the company's premium users, at the first stage only for iOS users living in the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.
