Israeli Fans Shocked by Macklemore Anti-Israel Stunt at Ed Sheeran Show
Two Israeli concertgoers shared their distress after American rapper Macklemore used his opening set at an Ed Sheeran concert to launch an anti-Israel protest, prompting thousands in the crowd to join in.
Pro-Palestinian protests have become commonplace over the last three years, but yesterday, one such demonstration caught Gali Levin and Noya Zuarez completely off guard. During the opening act of British singer Ed Sheeran's concert, American rapper Macklemore, known for his anti-Israel rhetoric, launched into pro-Palestinian chants, with large segments of the crowd joining in.
Speaking to Israeli television, the two women described the deeply unsettling experience. Zuarez shared that her father, who had accompanied them to the show, chose to leave the venue immediately and did not stay for the main performance.
'Forced to Be Part of This Antisemitism'
Noya Zuarez expressed her frustration at being trapped in the crowd:
"We were forced to be part of this antisemitism. It was a punch to the gut. People can have their opinions, but you find yourself suddenly thrown into a pro-Palestinian rally. You have no way to respond. You scream 'Fuck Hamas' among tens of thousands of people, but no one can hear you while he points the microphone to the crowd."
Gali Levin added that there were warning signs early on, even though they were not familiar with the rapper beforehand. She noted that he wore a scarf resembling a keffiyeh and gradually integrated political messages into his set before delivering a speech that culminated in a mass chant.
The Struggle of Israeli Public Diplomacy
As residents of New Jersey, both women pointed out that Israel is facing a significant challenge regarding public diplomacy and advocacy abroad. They noted that official state-led public relations efforts feel unorganized and lacking in impact.
However, they praised the local Jewish community for its grassroots efforts. From Jewish schools to major public events like the "Celebrate Israel Parade," local Zionists and Jewish organizations work hard to project positive energy and support, even if these efforts are not centrally coordinated by the state.
Disappointment in Ed Sheeran
The women expressed disappointment in Ed Sheeran himself, who kept Macklemore on the lineup for his subsequent show, where the rapper reportedly repeated the same political stunt.
"We are a bit angry with him because he knew exactly what he was subjecting us to. What we experienced yesterday happened again today, as friends in our local groups confirmed he made the exact same chants."
