Nazi salute and antisemitic posts: The scandal embarrassing the Republican Party
A Nazi salute, posts calling for the expulsion of Jews, and allegations of managing a racist anonymous account: The scandal surrounding a former club treasurer in New York deepens after he was filmed spending time with senior officials days after being suspended.
A new political scandal is rocking New York, centered on the city's youth branch of the Republican Party. Nicholas Rafael, the club's former treasurer, was recently suspended from his position after a photo was published in which he is seen raising his hand in a Nazi salute. Alongside the photo, it was revealed that Rafael likely managed an anonymous account on the social network X, where he disseminated harsh antisemitic and racist messages, including explicit calls against the Jewish community. However, despite the organization's official statements regarding his immediate suspension and the opening of an internal investigation, it appears that his ties with the club's leadership remain tight.
According to a report published in the magazine "Politico", just about ten days after the scandal was exposed, Rafael was spotted spending time, dining, and mingling at a public event in "Little Italy" in New York, alongside the club's president, Stefano Forte, and another board member. This documentation raises difficult questions among party officials regarding the sincerity of the suspension and the investigation promised to the public.
Parallel to the Nazi salute, additional posts were revealed from the account attributed to Rafael, in which it was written, among other things, that "societies thrive when Jews are expelled from the city," alongside recurring antisemitic slurs. Rafael claimed that the photo was fake and denied any connection to the account, but identifying findings — including a Google profile picture that was not blurred and personal selfies — strengthen the evidence against him.
The current event does not exist in a vacuum. The New York Young Republicans club has been considered particularly extreme in recent years and operates on the fringe wing of the party. Just recently, the club organized controversial delegations, including a tour of a whites-only enclave in South Africa and participation in a conference in Portugal that called for the return of immigrants to their countries of origin. The growing radicalization has led to a wave of departures by members and dozens of leadership positions remaining vacant.
In response to "Politico", the club's lawyer claimed that Rafael is suspended from all official activity and does not participate in votes. On the other hand, the organizers of the event where Rafael was seen were quick to distance themselves and clarified that they condemn supporters of Nazism and would not have allowed his presence at the venue.
