The Moving Reopening of Zikim Beach: "A Victory of the Spirit"

For the first time since the October 7 massacre, Zikim Beach is fully open to the public for the current bathing season. After being severely damaged during the Hamas attack, the beach underwent an extensive rehabilitation process and is now back to hosting the Israeli public as part of the summer season.

The rehabilitation of the coastline and infrastructure was carried out with an investment of approximately 20 million shekels, funded by the Tkuma Authority, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council. As part of the work, new restroom and changing room facilities were built, access roads were paved, parking lots were arranged, energy-efficient lighting was installed, and extensive accessibility adjustments were made from the parking lot to the shade structures and restrooms. For the residents of the area, the opening of the beach is much more than just infrastructure renewal. The place became one of the symbols of the October 7 attack, and the return of the public to it symbolizes coping with the trauma and the choice to continue living, traveling, and developing the Gaza envelope communities.

Head of the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council, Itamar Revivo, said:

"The return of the people of Israel to Zikim Beach is a victory of the spirit and our strongest Zionist answer. In every step and every grain of sand in Zikim, there is an unceasing pain for the fallen and the murdered heroes we lost on that black Saturday — vacationers, fishermen, and security personnel."

"The reopening of the beach is our moral duty to commemorate them. We do not forget for a moment those we lost, and in the same breath, we choose life, rehabilitation, and growth. The arrival of travelers here this summer is the biggest embrace for our community," added Revivo. This summer, with the return of thousands of Israelis to Zikim Beach, also brings a message of renewal: the place that absorbed one of the most difficult moments of trauma in the region's history is returning to serve as a site for recreation, nature, and leisure for the public.
