If you live near a busy road, you may be paying a heavier price than you thought, and not just in sleep quality. A new, large-scale Danish study published in the journal JAMA Neurology has found a consistent link between long-term exposure to traffic noise and an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease.

The researchers, led by Dr. Mette Sørensen of the Danish Cancer Society Research Center, followed more than 3.1 million residents in Denmark aged 40 and older. The follow-up lasted nearly 18 years, during which 20,587 new cases of the disease were diagnosed. The team used precise national data to map noise levels at every residential address, assessing both the most exposed side of the house and the quieter side.

The results were clear: an increase of about 11.5 decibels on the most exposed side of the house was associated with a 3% increase in Parkinson's risk. Noise on the quieter side also had an effect: an increase of about 9 decibels was associated with a 4% rise in risk. This link remained significant even after accounting for air pollution, green spaces, socio-economic status, education, and population density.

The Protective Buffer of Your Home

Despite the warning signs, the researchers point to an encouraging finding related to home structure. According to the study, the existence of a "quiet side"—a part of the house that is at least 10 decibels quieter than the other—acts as a protective buffer. "From a prevention perspective, it is important to ensure that apartments have a quiet side, because this may reduce the potential neurodegenerative effects of chronic noise exposure," Sørensen and her colleagues noted.

The researchers argue that previous studies, which examined only the loudest side of a structure, likely underestimated health risks by failing to account for whether residents had a quiet place to retreat to inside their homes.

The Link Between Chronic Noise and the Brain

The biological link between chronic noise and Parkinson's risk is based on several key mechanisms. Persistent noise impairs sleep quality—a component critical for maintaining brain health—and triggers a stress response in the body. Experts explain that these processes can cause neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the areas of the brain responsible for dopamine production.

Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the world, currently affecting more than 11 million people. Researchers warn that the burden of the disease is expected to more than double in the coming decades due to increased life expectancy.

"Since there is currently no cure for the disease, identifying modifiable environmental factors is a top priority for public health," said Dr. Fernando Alonso Frech, a neurologist at the HM CINAC Comprehensive Neuroscience Center. He added that the findings reinforce the need for urban planning policies, such as installing noise barriers and designing buildings to ensure living areas are less exposed to traffic noise.

Professor Thomas Münzel, a co-author of the study, noted that environmental noise is a "newcomer" in the literature on Parkinson's risk factors. He believes these findings should move noise from the category of hypothesis to that of a reliable risk factor, encouraging further research in the field.
