Golden State Warriors veteran Draymond Green is facing unprecedented scrutiny following a historically slow offensive start to the 2026/27 NBA season. The four-time champion and former Defensive Player of the Year has scored just 21 total points through his first seven games, averaging a meager 3 points in 26.7 minutes per night.

Green's shooting percentages have plummeted significantly. He is converting just 38.1 percent from the field, well below his career average of 44.7 percent, and a dismal 20.9 percent from beyond the arc. Alarmingly, Green has recorded more than twice as many turnovers (22) as field goals made (8) and even more turnovers than field goal attempts (21).

Advanced statistics also point to a troubling trend. The Warriors currently post a plus-7.9 net rating when Green sits on the bench, compared to a plus-2.1 rating when he is on the floor. Former NBA player and analyst Kendrick Perkins recently did not hold back his criticism, labeling Green a liability during an appearance following Green's ejection after an altercation with Dillon Brooks.

"At some point, we have to stop giving Draymond a pass based on his legacy and ask when he is going to produce on the court," Perkins stated. "He is averaging 3 points and shooting 38 percent. That is unacceptable for a player making the kind of money he makes." Green signed a contract extension over the summer worth 27.7 million dollars for the upcoming season.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has also addressed the offensive struggles, noting that Green is currently trying too hard to force plays. "He is just too aggressive right now," Kerr explained. "He needs to feel more comfortable with the new concepts we are introducing and show more patience." Kerr acknowledged that Green has taken responsibility for his turnovers during games but emphasized that the team is still adapting to a new offensive system.

Despite the offensive woes, Green demonstrated his enduring defensive value in a recent 120-100 victory over Miami. Playing extensively at center against elite talents like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, Green finished with just 2 points but added 11 assists, 5 rebounds, a steal, and a block. Kerr praised his defensive effort, calling his performance on Antetokounmpo brilliant. The Warriors are left weighing whether Green's defensive mastery outweighs his concerning offensive regression.
