Nestled on the bustling Hanassi Avenue in Haifa's Mercaz HaCarmel, a tiny eatery is capturing the hearts and palates of local food lovers. Nem Viet, founded by Son Nguyen, brings authentic Vietnamese street food to the bustling neighborhood with a cozy, home-style atmosphere. Despite operating out of a modest space with outdoor sidewalk seating, the restaurant has quickly become a culinary hot spot.

A Labor of Love

Son Nguyen, a native of Vietnam who has lived in Israel for many years, opened the restaurant a little over a year ago. Driven by a deep love for Israel and a desire to share her culinary heritage, she noticed a distinct lack of authentic Vietnamese options in the country. Her menu is intentionally compact, offering diners an approachable selection of vegetables, tofu, chicken, and beef dishes without overwhelming pages of options.

"When I opened, I thought I loved giving people what I can from Vietnam," Nguyen shares, reflecting the personal warmth that defines the dining experience.

Flavorful Highlights

Among the standout starters are the signature crispy spring rolls. Filled with chicken, glass noodles, wood-ear and shiitake mushrooms, carrots, kohlrabi, and herbs wrapped in delicate rice paper, they are served with a traditional sweet and sour dipping sauce. Alongside these, the fresh, unfried spring rolls offer a refreshing contrast with crisp lettuce, cucumbers, and mint, complemented by a rich peanut sauce.

Main courses continue the journey through northern Vietnamese flavors. The fragrant coconut curry features potatoes, carrots, bamboo shoots, and eggplant in a delicate lemongrass-infused broth, while the wok-tossed rice noodles deliver a comforting, hearty finish. Despite the casual, paper-plate setting, the generous portions and genuine hospitality ensure that every visitor leaves thoroughly satisfied.
