Ships, private jets, and fears of accidents: frenzy in Spain ahead of rare solar eclipse
A total solar eclipse will appear today in the skies over Europe for the first time since 1999, with a path crossing Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. In Spain, where it is the first total eclipse in a century, record demand has been recorded to view the event, including the rental of private jets and ships on the high seas.

For the first time since 1999, a total solar eclipse will be visible over the European continent today, Wednesday. The event is expected to occur in the evening hours and last approximately two minutes and 18 seconds.
Residents of Spain, Greenland, Iceland, and parts of Russia will witness the rare phenomenon, which begins in northeastern Siberia, crosses the Greenland ice sheet, passes the western edge of Iceland, traverses the North Atlantic to northern Spain, and continues along the Iberian Peninsula from the coast of Cantabria to the Mediterranean Sea.
In Spain, where the first total solar eclipse in over a century is occurring, there are reports of extraordinary demand to view the event. Since the eclipse will only be visible in specific regions, tens of thousands have reserved spots on beaches, while others have rented ships for high-seas viewing. Wealthy individuals have also chartered private jets to watch the eclipse from the sky.
Meanwhile, the government of Catalonia is preparing a large-scale operation involving civil defense, police, and local authorities to prevent traffic congestion and road accidents. Authorities fear that drivers may stop on roads or become distracted, leading to accidents. Additionally, extreme heat and fire risks have prompted the closure of several natural parks.
Spanish authorities have published health guidelines for observers. According to the Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP), thousands of families are expected to participate. Dr. Valero Sebastian, spokesperson for the AEP Health Promotion Committee, noted:
"Although children do not have a greater biological risk of suffering eye damage compared to adults, their curiosity, tendency to act impulsively, or difficulty in assessing certain dangers make it especially important that they understand, before the eclipse, why they must not look directly at the sun without sufficient protection."
