Security Investigation Alleges Privacy Risks in LG Smart Televisions

A new security investigation has raised serious privacy concerns regarding LG smart televisions, alleging that the devices may collect home network data, scan connected gadgets, and potentially record audio through built-in microphones while in standby mode.
According to the analysis conducted by the technology channel Gamers Nexus alongside independent researchers and Level1Techs experts, tested OLED models continued network operations even when users believed the TVs were powered off.
The investigation claims the screens detected computers, smartphones, printers, and smart home appliances linked to the same local network. Researchers also reported that neighboring Wi-Fi network details, including SSIDs and signal strengths, were gathered, with certain data transmitted to the LG Ad Solutions advertising branch.
However, the most severe allegation involves the integrated microphone. Researchers warned that exploiting a security vulnerability to compromise the television could allow malicious actors to activate the microphone and record indoor environments while the screen appears dark. Findings suggest recordings might be stored locally during internet outages and transmitted once connectivity is restored.
