Europe is burning: hundreds of millions face an extreme heat wave
Extreme heat and drought are triggering massive wildfires across Europe. The continent is grappling with record-breaking temperatures that are threatening infrastructure and public safety.
The Situation in Europe
An extreme heat wave is sweeping across large parts of Europe, with over 340 million people facing temperatures exceeding 30 degrees. Authorities in the UK, France, and Greece are simultaneously managing the consequences of extreme weather, ranging from drought to wildfires and high winds.
In the UK, temperatures are expected to reach 38 degrees. The number of wildfires in England and Wales has already hit 1,017 this year, matching the total for all of 2025. In France, the heat wave has persisted for 17 days, marking the third-longest period of extreme temperatures on record. In Greece, the primary concern is the spread of fires fueled by winds gusting over 100 km/h, prompting authorities to raise readiness levels.
UK: Infrastructure Concerns
An amber alert for extreme heat has been issued across large areas of England. Meteorologist Alex Barkeyl warned that the heat could severely impact infrastructure, as rail lines and roads are not designed to withstand such temperatures.
According to the British meteorological service, this is the ninth day in 2026 with temperatures above 35 degrees. Several stations, including Kew Gardens in west London, have already recorded 37 degrees or higher. The situation is exacerbated by drought, with nearly three-quarters of England and all of Wales facing water shortages, putting significant strain on agriculture and the environment.
France: Firefighters Call for Mobilization
In France, where temperatures have hit 38 degrees, firefighters' unions met with Interior Minister Laurent Nunez to discuss urgent needs. Union representatives expressed frustration over staffing and resource shortages, stating that the firefighting system has reached a breaking point. They have announced plans for a protest in Paris at the end of September.
Greece: Risk of Massive Fires
In Greece, the combination of summer heat and strong winds has created a volatile environment. Gusts exceeding 100 km/h have been recorded in Athens, across the Aegean Sea, and on Crete. Authorities have closed several well-known hills in Athens to the public as a precaution. The civil protection agency has warned that Friday, when winds are expected to peak, will bring the highest level of fire risk to at least five regions of the country.
