Knesset member Amit Halevi: "Turkey and Iran want to topple the right-wing government"
A Likud Knesset member praised the democratic process in his party in an interview with 103fm. He explained the need for reserved spots requested by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and warned against foreign interference in Israeli elections.
Knesset member Amit Halevi of the Likud party was interviewed today, Tuesday, on 103fm and addressed the reserved spots requested by Benjamin Netanyahu, the primaries in his party, and reports regarding countries working to interfere in the Israeli election system.
Halevi praised the primaries in Likud, calling them a "model of Israeli democracy," while claiming that "most parties are a dictatorship of one person." Regarding the reserved spots requested by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he said that Likud members agreed on the need to implement them due to current circumstances, in order to add candidates who represent the movement's values and allow Likud to renew itself.
Later in the interview, Halevi addressed the interference of foreign countries in the election system:
"Turkey, Iran, and other parties that will be exposed later, want to topple the right-wing government."
Halevi's remarks come against the backdrop of internal controversy in Likud over the method of selecting the party's list for the Knesset. After lengthy discussions, the Likud constitution committee approved the compromise outline of Minister Haim Katz, according to which primaries will be held, and at the same time, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be granted eight reserved spots in realistic positions on the list. The outline sparked criticism from some party members, who claimed that the scope of the reserved spots is unusual and could harm the status of registered members and incumbent Knesset members.
