IDF Reservists Report Severe Living Conditions and Water Shortages at Lachish Base
IDF reservists training at the Lachish base report severe sanitation issues, broken infrastructure, water shortages, and poor living conditions, prompting calls for immediate upgrades.
IDF reservists reporting for training at the Lachish Regional Training Base (BAF) are facing severe living conditions, sanitation hazards, and a lack of running water. Soldiers point out that despite completing around 200 days of reserve duty since the war began, basic conditions remain unaddressed, echoing problems encountered during previous rotations.
Operational Readiness and Sanitation Issues
T., a reservist in the David Division who previously served at the base in November 2025, noted that widespread illness broke out during the last round due to poor kitchen hygiene. "During the previous rotation, the kitchen was apparently unclean. The lack of hygiene led to situations where soldiers contracted various illnesses," T. said, adding that over half of his unit suffered from severe gastrointestinal issues.
According to the reservists, physical ailments directly impact operational effectiveness. Diarrhea and dehydration risks diminish troop efficiency. Upon returning for the current round ahead of the holiday, soldiers hoped for infrastructure improvements, but encountered rusted beds requiring wooden boards beneath mattresses, littered grounds, and meals served exclusively in disposable packaging.
Water Shortages and Out-of-Pocket Expenses
The troops also reported a severe shortage of cold, running drinking water. Water is supplied via temporary containers, forcing soldiers to search for functioning water fountains across the facility. "Most of us buy water out of our own pockets instead of receiving the bare minimum of cold water available in this heat," T. stated.
Further compounding the frustration, soldiers cited lingering sewage puddles, foul odors, and outdated logistics transport, including buses lacking air conditioning and seatbelts. Many report purchasing tactical gear, weapon optics, and uniform items independently through donations.
IDF Response
The IDF Spokesperson's Unit responded to the claims, stating: "The sewage system issue at the base was addressed on Thursday. Claims regarding defects in the bedrooms and kitchens were investigated and are unrecognized following extensive checks at the base. Should additional testimonies be received, a further investigation will be conducted."
