IDF Arrests Three Palestinian Police Officers Over Attack on Israeli Soldier
IDF forces arrested three Palestinian police officers who set up an unauthorized checkpoint in Area C near Bitunia last month, detaining and assaulting an Israeli reserve soldier.
IDF forces have arrested three Palestinian police officers involved in setting up an unauthorized checkpoint in Area C near Bitunia last month, leading to the detention and assault of an Israeli citizen. The suspects are currently undergoing security interrogation.
The incident took place last month on the Bitunia bypass road in the western Binyamin region, when an Israeli reserve soldier was driving toward the Dolev-Talmon bloc. Palestinian police officers stationed a blockade on the route, stopped him, and seized his military weapon. The soldier was not injured in the incident.
Initially, claims were made that Palestinian security forces arrived at the scene following a gathering and out of concern for the Israeli's safety. However, preliminary findings from the IDF investigation revealed that the Palestinian police themselves set up the checkpoint in Area C and detained the soldier on their own initiative, operating in a zone where they lack independent authority.
The investigation also noted that the soldier was traveling along Maozim Road, a route passing through hazardous areas where travel is supposed to be coordinated with the IDF. The military clarified, however, that this fact does not diminish the severity of the Palestinian officers' actions in Area C.
Following the incident, MK Zvi Sukkot visited the location and demanded that the IDF and the security establishment locate and arrest the implicated officers. The IDF has now announced the arrest of the three policemen.
The security establishment categorized the incident as a "severe breach" by the Palestinian forces, noting that it endangered the life of the Israeli citizen and involved the use of "aggressive and severe" force against him.
The IDF emphasized that security coordination with the Palestinian Authority mechanisms continues in accordance with political directives, but made it clear that "the IDF will not accept any deviation from regulations."
