Herzliya Man Indicted for Killing Roommate Following Dispute Over Dog

The Tel Aviv District Attorney's Office filed an indictment in the Tel Aviv District Court against 34-year-old Daniel Solomatov from Herzliya, charging him with the killing under diminished responsibility of his roommate, Yuri Korneev. The case stems from a violent dispute over a stray dog.

According to the indictment, filed by Attorney Oren Haim, Solomatov, his partner, the victim, and another roommate lived together in an apartment in Herzliya. Approximately two months ago, the four began drinking alcohol together in the afternoon. Later that evening, an argument broke out between Solomatov and Korneev after the front door was left open, allowing Solomatov's dog to escape.

During the altercation, Solomatov initially struck the victim before leaving to search for the dog. Upon his return with the pet, Korneev approached him holding a kitchen knife and stabbed Solomatov in the waist. In response, Solomatov began punching the victim, successfully disarmed him, and threw the knife away. Solomatov then pursued Korneev as he retreated to his room, beating him severely on the head, face, and chest, and continuing the assault even after the victim lost consciousness. Korneev sustained severe multi-system injuries and died in the hospital about two weeks later.

The prosecution has requested that Solomatov be detained until the conclusion of legal proceedings. In the detention motion, prosecutors emphasized that Solomatov's high level of dangerousness is evident from the circumstances of the offense. While the incident began with a knife attack by the victim, the prosecution argued that Solomatov did not act in self-defense, but rather engaged in unbridled retribution. After the knife was discarded, Solomatov pursued the retreating victim, knocked him down, and subjected him to a systematic and destructive assault before continuing to strike him mercilessly as he lay unconscious.
