The Israel Defense Forces and security services have significantly reinforced their presence in Hebron and the surrounding area ahead of the upcoming "Chayei Sarah" weekend, which is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the Cave of the Patriarchs. The heightened security posture follows a deadly shooting attack at the Yehuda Junction two weeks ago. According to military assessments, while there is no specific concrete threat warning for the weekend events, security forces are operating on high alert.

Comprehensive Security Drills

In preparation for the mass influx of pilgrims, multiple military units—including the 101st Battalion, the Aryeh Battalion, and Battalion 6261—conducted extensive joint exercises across the Jewish community of Hebron, Kiryat Arba, and the southern Hebron Hills. The drills simulated extreme scenarios and coordinated command structures between various sectors. The exercises involved the IDF, the Israel Police, Border Police, Magen David Adom, Fire and Rescue services, and local security coordinators.

Operation "Roar of Yehuda"

The security buildup builds on ongoing counter-terrorism operations launched in the wake of the October 23 shooting attack, which claimed the lives of IDF soldiers St.-Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roitman and St.-Sgt. Yuval Shay Soylem. Under the codename "Roar of Yehuda," the IDF, Shin Bet, and Border Police have scanned over 500 targets and detained approximately 50 suspects. A week following the attack, military engineering units demolished the homes of the two terrorists involved.

Security Precedents

Historically, the "Chayei Sarah" weekend has frequently been marked by friction and security incidents. During last year's event, two female Border Police officers were assaulted and required medical treatment, and gunfire was reported from within Hebron. In 2023, mass gatherings in the city were canceled due to the ongoing wartime emergency. Earlier incidents in previous years involved clashes, public disturbances, and friction between visitors and security forces.

Police and Regional Deployment

Israel Police reinforcements, operating under the Judea Regional Command led by Commander Eliyahu Zeitoun, deployed early Friday morning around the Cave of the Patriarchs and the Jewish quarter. Central District Commander Superintendent Moshe Pinchi conducted a comprehensive situation assessment at the forward command post, praising the operational readiness of the forces and instructing commanders to prioritize traffic regulation during peak entry hours for the Sabbath.
