Jewish Life Revives in Gomel Under New Leadership
The historic Jewish community in Gomel, Belarus, is entering a new era of revival. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Kut and his family are relocating to lead communal and educational projects ahead of the High Holidays, with support from the Russian rabbinate.
The city that once served as a major cultural and spiritual center in Eastern Europe is preparing for a new chapter with the assistance of the Russian rabbinate and under the leadership of a young man who grew up in the Estonian community, as Jewish life in the country's second-largest city takes a significant step forward.
Historical Legacy and Revival
In the annals of Eastern Europe, the city of Gomel in Belarus holds a special place in Jewish memory. It was once a vibrant communal and cultural hub that attracted thousands, and was home to Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Epstein ("Reb Isaac of Gomel"), one of the region's leading thinkers and leaders in the 19th century. However, the community later underwent severe upheavals—from underground activity under the Soviet regime to long years of decline and silence. Now, Belarus's second-largest city is facing a significant effort to restore its former glory.
New Leadership for Gomel
This new spirit received practical expression at a farewell event held this week in Moscow. Friends of Menachem Mendel Kut gathered to accompany him and his family as they departed for their new communal mission in Gomel. For Kut, such public activity is not foreign; he comes from a family with rich experience in the field—his father, Rabbi Samuel Kut, serves as the Chief Rabbi of Estonia and has led a cultural and communal transformation there in recent decades.
The move is supported and blessed by the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Berel Lazar, who oversees communal activities across the post-Soviet space. According to Lazar, an active communal infrastructure is already operating in Gomel under the leadership of local community chairman Yossef Zholdov. Zholdov, considered a key figure in managing community affairs, warmly welcomed the new family and explained that their arrival is intended to inject fresh energy, expand social and educational activities, and develop existing institutions.
Preparation for the Holidays
The transition coincides with the peak of preparations for the High Holidays. The family is expected to coordinate cultural events, community gatherings, and holiday prayers for hundreds of local community members. The stated goal of the joint leadership is to re-establish Gomel as an active and prominent Jewish center in southeastern Belarus, alongside the communities currently operating in the capital Minsk and other major cities across the country.
