Soul legend Gladys Knight continues to perform at 82, but growing concerns from fans and her family have sparked intense scrutiny. Her son, Shanga Hankerson, claims she is suffering from advanced dementia and alleges that her husband and manager, William McDowell, is forcing her to keep touring despite her declining health.

Family Concerns and Legal Allegations

Hankerson told the Daily Mail that his mother's cognitive decline has been progressing for years, noting instances where she appeared disoriented on stage and relied heavily on teleprompters. Last year, Hankerson filed a complaint with adult protective services in North Carolina, accusing McDowell of psychological and financial abuse. While Knight previously denied these claims, stating she feels healthy and happy, her son insists he is only trying to ensure her well-being and access to resources.

I am worried about her all the time. I can't watch videos or things people send me. I have to block everything, Hankerson said.

Tours, Confusion, and Mixed Reactions

Concerns intensified last summer after several performances where fans noticed Knight wandering on stage and looking confused. Following reports from the Los Angeles Times and viral videos, McDowell acknowledged that Knight has good and bad days, noting she had not been formally diagnosed with dementia at the time but promised to consult a physician. Shortly after, Knight announced plans to scale back her touring schedule to spend more time with family.

Despite the ongoing family feud and past legal disputes between Knight and her son, other relatives have chosen to remain cautious. Her older brother, Merald "Bubba" Knight, urged fans to keep praying, emphasizing that the family hopes for a peaceful resolution behind the scenes.
