When Apple launched the iPhone 17 last September, a race against the clock began without us noticing. If current reports regarding the company's launch plans turn out to be correct, the current model is about to break a record that has stood for 15 years — and become the standard iPhone that has remained at the top of Apple's offerings for the longest time.

The current record holder is the iPhone 4, which arrived in stores in June 2010 and remained Apple's leading iPhone model until October 2011. The reason was not necessarily a decision to keep it for longer than usual, but a change in the company's schedule: Apple moved the main iPhone launch from the summer months to the fall during that period. The result was an unusual tenure of almost 16 months.

For customers who were waiting for the "iPhone 5" back then, it was a particularly frustrating period. Even when the wait ended, Apple did not introduce the model many expected, but the iPhone 4S — a device that looked almost identical to its predecessor. The significant changes were hidden inside, with the debut of Siri, an improvement in the camera, and a jump in performance.

The launch of the iPhone 4 itself was also split into several stages. AT&T, which was then the exclusive operator of the iPhone in the USA, received it first. Verizon joined only about half a year later and became the second American operator to offer an iPhone. Even the white model was delayed again and again, and arrived only after about ten months of postponements.

Since then, no Apple flagship model has managed to match the unusual period of the iPhone 4. The closest was the iPhone 11 Pro, which remained at the top for about 13 months following the delay in the launch of the iPhone 12 series during the coronavirus pandemic. Although there were much larger gaps between models like the iPhone SE, its second generation, and the iPhone 16e, these belong to different product cycles and not to the sequence of launches of the main flagship models. And this is where the iPhone 17 comes into the picture.

According to reports, the iPhone 18 is not expected to arrive until the spring of 2027. If this schedule indeed materializes, the iPhone 17 will remain the latest standard model in Apple's main series for about 18 months. In doing so, it will not only break the record of the iPhone 4, but will set a new bar for the life cycle of a standard iPhone before the arrival of its successor.

However, there is a significant difference between what happened in 2010 and 2011 and the situation today. During the iPhone 4 period, Apple did not have a separate Pro series. The long wait between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S actually created a dry spell for customers who were waiting for a new and significant device.

Today, the structure of the iPhone family is different. Therefore, even if the iPhone 17 does indeed remain in its place until the spring of 2027 and breaks a 15-year record, the meaning for customers is not necessarily the same wait that iPhone 4 users experienced. But in terms of the iPhone history books, the clock is already ticking — and one of Apple's oldest records may be broken within months.
