Eli Yishai, who served for 14 years as chairman of Shas, is considering a return to political life and is examining the possibility of joining forces with the "Haredi Tzibur" party, as first reported in the "Central Edition".
According to the report, several meetings have taken place recently between Yishai and senior members of the new party, with the sides seriously examining the possibility of running together in the upcoming elections. The "Haredi Tzibur" party presents a line of support for the conscription of Haredim who do not study and appeals mainly to the working Haredi public.
According to sources familiar with the details, one of the goals of the move is to also appeal to disappointed Shas voters, who they claim are not satisfied with the party's conduct in recent years, a trend that they say is also reflected in the polls.
If the move is carried out, it will be another attempt by Yishai to return to the Knesset. In 2014, after his resignation from Shas, he founded the "Yachad" party in cooperation with Rabbi Meir Mazuz. The party won about 125,000 votes, but did not pass the electoral threshold.
According to the report, there are also gaps between Yishai's positions and the line currently led by Shas, mainly on the issue of Haredi conscription and other topics.
Political figures involved in the talks estimate that a connection between Yishai and the "Haredi Tzibur" party could constitute a significant force and even pass the electoral threshold, but at this stage no final decision has been made.
