A 76-year-old woman in Israel lost approximately 105,000 shekels in cash after falling victim to an elaborate scam involving impersonation and suspected artificial intelligence voice cloning. The perpetrators posed as National Insurance Institute representatives and allegedly manipulated phone caller IDs to mimic the victim's son.

The incident took place on Monday evening. Fraudsters contacted the elderly woman, a retired physician, under the pretext of offering a state-backed program to protect household savings from fires, burglaries, or rocket attacks. To build trust, the scammers diverted her son with a separate bogus phone call regarding a dental appointment, while using AI voice-cloning technology to replicate his voice and convince his mother to hand over her savings.

Following the instructions of the fake representatives, the victim handed over a cash envelope to a courier who arrived at her apartment building shortly afterwards. The fraudsters subsequently returned for foreign currency reserves, before family members returned home and realized the deception. The total loss amounted to about 105,000 shekels, which was designated as a wedding gift for her granddaughter.

The family filed a police complaint and distributed surveillance footage of the suspect. Following the publication, several tips emerged pointing to three potential names, which the family plans to hand over to law enforcement. Authorities continue to investigate the rising trend of sophisticated scams targeting elderly citizens across Israel.
