Footage released today, Thursday, reveals the moment the children's ward building at a hospital in the city of Cali, western Colombia, collapsed during the earthquake that struck the country earlier this week.
In the video, filmed by a security camera at the complex, the building is seen sustaining damage before collapsing completely within seconds due to the force of the quake. Twelve people were killed at the site, and dozens of others remain missing. Many patients fled to the street, where doctors began treating the injured.
Meanwhile, a 32-year-old woman, trapped under the rubble for 36 hours following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake, was rescued alive.
Daniela Largo was pulled from the collapsed building in the city of Pereira after a 10-hour rescue operation. Firefighters managed to reach her through a tunnel they dug beneath four heavy concrete slabs that had pinned her down.
At least 265 people have been killed in the earthquake, according to Colombian President Abelardo de la Asprilla, who stated that 496 others remain missing. In Pereira, a city in Colombia's coffee-growing region, 79 deaths have been confirmed—the second-highest toll after Cali, where 95 people died, according to data from the Association of Colombian Capitals (Asocapitales).
Largo's mother told the AFP news agency that a local resident heard her daughter screaming for help from beneath the debris. After emergency crews arrived, they successfully located Largo using a small camera. However, the rescue was complicated by the four heavy concrete slabs blocking the way.
