David Amsalem backs Likud court ruling: "It is a fair and justified decision"
Likud Minister David Amsalem expressed his support for the party court's decision to bar MKs and ministers from running in district slots during primaries. Amsalem noted that the party's election bylaws have always maintained a clear distinction between these categories.
Minister David Amsalem announced on Wednesday in an interview with 103FM radio that he supports the decision of the Likud party court issued yesterday, which rules that MKs and ministers should not be allowed to run in the districts during the party's primaries.
"The party court's decision was fair. The Likud election bylaws have always established that there are districts, and anyone who is an MK cannot run in them. I personally think it is a justified process," Amsalem added. He also mentioned that he "would be happy" to see Gadi Eisenkot join the Likud.
"A sitting Member of Knesset will not be able to run for a guaranteed representation slot, unless he resigns from the Knesset and does not take anything from the state treasury to fund the primaries," the ruling stated, accepting claims that sitting MKs should not be allowed to run for district slots. Thus, the separation between national slots and district representation slots remains in place.
The ruling came following a series of petitions filed after the Likud conference last week, where the clause was approved by a narrow margin. In several of the petitions, it was claimed, among other things, that a series of irregularities occurred during the vote.
