Cristiano Ronaldo Retires from Portugal National Team After 23 Years
Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from the Portugal national team at age 41, concluding a legendary 23-year career with 234 appearances and 146 goals.

An era in global football has come to an end as Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from the Portugal national team after more than two decades in the national colors. The 41-year-old star concludes a legendary international career spanning 234 appearances and 146 goals, having led his country to victory at Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
In an emotional video message shared on social media, Ronaldo addressed Portuguese fans directly. "Today is the time to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team. I never felt it belonged only to me, but for 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility to wear it, defend it, and carry it with me to stadiums all over the world," Ronaldo stated.
The star made his debut for Portugal in August 2003 at the age of 18, eventually becoming the all-time leading scorer and appearance maker in men's international football. He participated in six World Cups, scoring in every single tournament. The pinnacle of his international career was lifting the Euro 2016 trophy, followed by Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025.
However, the departure also comes against the backdrop of a tense period in his relationship with national team coach Jorge Jesus. During the previous international break, Ronaldo remained on the bench against Norway and subsequently left the squad following a disagreement over playing time and broken promises. Following a suspension and a fine, Ronaldo has now chosen to officially conclude his international journey.
