An afternoon cup of coffee containing about 100 milligrams of caffeine helps combat fatigue and improves cognitive performance. International health organizations recommend limiting a single dose to 200 milligrams and finishing your coffee at least six hours before bedtime.

Data from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority indicate that a daily intake of up to 400 milligrams of caffeine is safe for adults. Studies show that a 200-milligram dose reduces distractions and lowers the mental effort required for cognitive tasks. Because caffeine acts on adenosine receptors in the brain, the body takes between five and six hours to metabolize half of the consumed amount.

The American Heart Association notes that moderate consumption of two to four cups of coffee daily is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. However, experts emphasize that the brewing method matters. Unfiltered coffee, such as espresso or French press, contains high levels of a compound called cafestol, which can raise bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. In contrast, filtered coffee and instant coffee are considered safer in this regard.

To help track caffeine intake, professionals break down the approximate amounts in various beverages:

A cup of filter coffee (200 ml) contains about 90 milligrams of caffeine.

An espresso shot (60 ml) or an energy drink (250 ml) contains about 80 milligrams of caffeine.

A cup of black tea contains about 50 milligrams of caffeine.

Alongside caffeine consumption, doctors recommend complementary habits to prevent afternoon fatigue. These include drinking enough water, eating a balanced meal combining proteins, complex carbohydrates, and fats, and taking a short walk in the fresh air to stimulate blood circulation.
