Australian Builder Bathele Collapses with Over $3.4 Billion in Debt
Australian construction giant Bathele has collapsed, leaving 45 active sites in Sydney unfinished and over $3.4 billion in debt. Liquidators from Teneo confirmed the company has run out of cash to fund ongoing projects.
Australian construction group Bathele has collapsed after accumulating massive debts exceeding $3.4 billion. The high-profile failure leaves 45 active construction sites with thousands of half-built apartments across Sydney, alongside stalled plans for thousands of additional housing units and millions of dollars owed to subcontractors, suppliers, and tax authorities.
Liquidators from the firm Teneo announced that the company no longer has the cash reserves required to fund ongoing works. Meanwhile, the Australian Taxation Office is demanding a separate debt of approximately $145 million. Private lenders and creditors have begun appointing receivers to specific projects in an attempt to salvage their funds, with some lenders paying subcontractors directly to prevent them from abandoning the sites.
At the center of the financial storm is the company's founder, Bharat Bhushan, who had previously provided extensive personal guarantees as security for loans taken out by the real estate group. Bhushan is currently facing approximately 128 personal charges and liens registered by credit funds and suppliers.
With assets registered in his own name valued at just $390,000—while the family's luxury real estate holdings and estates are registered under other relatives—creditors are expected to file for his personal bankruptcy if they fail to recover their money through asset sales.
