Apple changes the rules of medicine: the revolution on its way to the operating room
The new development by medical equipment giant Stryker displays surgical data hovering in the air before the surgeon's eyes. Despite the historic FDA approval, it has yet to be proven whether the technology shortens surgical procedures.

At Duke University Hospital in the USA, a remarkable technological milestone was recorded when a senior orthopedist completed a hip surgery while wearing Apple Vision Pro glasses. The innovative system, named SportSuite Vision and developed by the international medical equipment giant Stryker, effectively turns Apple's mixed reality glasses into a surgical cockpit. Instead of repeatedly shifting their gaze to distant screens, the surgeon sees the physical surgical field, while virtual windows float within their field of vision, including a live feed from the joint, CT scans, and planning metrics.
The real news is not just in the successful surgery, but in breaking the regulatory barrier. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted the development marketing authorization through the prestigious De Novo pathway, reserved for pioneering medical equipment that has no precedent or equivalent in the American market. This is the first approval of its kind for an application intended for active intraoperative use with these glasses.
Despite the innovation, it is important to emphasize that the system is not based on autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) and does not replace the surgeon's actions. Its main advantage at this stage is work comfort, as it saves the staff from unnecessary physical strain during long surgeries. However, alongside the ergonomic benefits, the FDA warns of potential dangers of software glitches or transmission delays, so the traditional screens in the room will continue to operate as a full backup. It now remains to be seen whether the development will also prove itself in shortening the duration of the surgery and reducing the rate of complications.
As recalled, the strategic goal behind the development of the technology, as outlined by then-Apple CEO Tim Cook ahead of 2025, was an ambitious vision for creating light and thin augmented reality (AR) glasses for daily consumer use, similar to regular prescription glasses. While the road to this goal is still fraught with challenges — from technological limitations and high production costs to the impact of stricter tariff policies between the USA and China, it seems that in the meantime, the unique technology is finding its purpose in equally critical places and paving the way for a new era in operating rooms.
