Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters on Thursday without hitting a ball after Italian Matteo Berrettini withdrew due to a hand injury. The Spanish star is chasing his fifth title of the season in the French capital, having already triumphed at the Australian Open, Doha, Tokyo, and last week in Vienna.

Alcaraz, who missed more than four months with a wrist injury earlier this year, has already secured his spot at the ATP Finals in Turin. He enters the Masters 1000 event carrying a stellar 39-5 match record this season.

His next opponent will be Taylor Fritz. The 12th-ranked American kept his ATP Finals qualification hopes alive by securing his second victory in a week over Arthur Fils, defeating the seventh-seeded Frenchman 6:3, 4:6 in front of the Parisian crowd to record his 100th career Masters match win.
