Mark Zuckerberg has presented a new plan for the future of artificial intelligence. In a 6,500-word article, the CEO of Meta argued that the safest way to manage AI risks is to distribute the technology to as many people as possible, rather than leaving it under the control of corporations and governments.

Meta announced it will release additional models with open weights, allowing users to download the parameters that determine their operation. The company will launch Muse Glimmer, and in the coming weeks, it expects to release an open version of Muse Spark 1.2, its most advanced model.

Zuckerberg argues that if artificial intelligence remains under the control of large companies and institutions, too much power will be concentrated in their hands.

"Meta's mission since our founding has been focused on putting power in the hands of people," he wrote.

At the same time, Zuckerberg aims to change how Meta oversees safety. According to him, the company's board of directors will play a greater role in setting safety rules for models in the future. He also called on the US government to cooperate with private companies in testing new models.

Billions on data centers

Zuckerberg's vision requires massive infrastructure. Meta plans to invest up to 145 billion dollars this year, mainly in data centers, and up to 600 billion dollars by 2028. However, these investments are sparking opposition. Meta plans to establish a one-billion-dollar fund to invest in communities near its data centers, in an attempt to show residents that they also benefit from the technological revolution.

Meanwhile, investors are demanding results. Zuckerberg explored the possibility of establishing a cloud computing business that would generate revenue directly from Meta's infrastructure, but the lack of details surrounding the move has contributed to a decline in the company's stock. Thus, while Zuckerberg presents a vision where AI empowers the individual and decentralizes power, Meta still faces a simpler task: to catch up with OpenAI and Anthropic and prove to investors that the massive investment in artificial intelligence will indeed pay off.
